Computer-aided scoring as an objective method in the assessment of HER2 immunostaining in breast cancer with high intra-tumoral heterogeneity

The interpretation of HER2/neu immunostaining in breast cancer can be challenging, particularly in cases with high intra-tumoral heterogeneity where pathologist scoring may vary. To address this issue, the study assessed the role of Applied Spectral Imaging’s HiPath Pro computational algorithm in providing an objective and integrative evaluation of HER2 expression. By digitally marking regions of interest on H&E images and transferring them to HER2-stained slides, both pathologists and the computer-aided system performed integrative scoring. Results demonstrated high agreement, with computational scoring serving as a valuable method to enhance consistency, reproducibility, and confidence in HER2 assessment.
