FISH analysis can be performed on non-dividing cells obtained from blood, bone marrow, and
tissue sections. It can detect duplication and deletion of chromosome regions including gene
amplification such as the HER2 gene in breast cancer; rearrangement of the ALK and ROS1
genes in lung cancer; and gene rearrangements present in soft and solid tumors such as bone
and brain cancers; anomalies associated with hematological malignancies including acute
promyelocytic leukemia (APL); disorders of sexual development (DSD); birth defects; and
repeated pregnancy loss.
